Kristian Kaarna is a Finnish photographer and cultural organiser based in Riogordo, a small village in southern Spain. His work moves between personal photographic projects, international exhibitions, and long-term community-based cultural initiatives.

Alongside his own exhibitions, Kristian leads and develops large-scale projects such as Hymyilevä Oulu 26, a year-long photography project that is an official part of the Oulu 2026 European Capital of Culture programme. Through photography, the project brings together people from different backgrounds and highlights stories of minorities, loneliness, and everyday encounters.

Kristian is the founder and president of the Augmenters Cultural Association, through which he organises exhibitions, photography competitions, workshops, artist residencies, and EU-level cultural projects. Much of this work takes place in Riogordo, in close collaboration with the local community and institutions, but also extends internationally through European partnerships.

Living in a rural environment is a conscious choice. Being part of a smaller, warmer community allows time for connection, shared experiences, and new friendships formed through cultural work. This way of living and working is central to Kristian’s practice: art is not separate from everyday life, but grows out of it.

In his photography, Kristian focuses on landscapes, people, and subtle details, often working in black and white. His images seek out moments that are quiet rather than spectacular, reflecting a belief that meaning is found in presence, attention, and human connection.

His photographic background is rooted in his studies in Paris, where he trained at two renowned institutions: Speos International Photography School (1995) and MJM Photography School (1993).
